North Eddy Street Bridge in Eau Claire Placed Under Immediate 5-Ton Weight Limit

Mar 25, 2026

A 5-ton weight restriction was imposed immediately on the North Eddy Street bridge following a state inspection last week.

The restriction aims to reduce stress on the aging structure and minimize the risk of additional damage. The bridge, which carries vehicle traffic over Union Pacific railroad tracks, is privately owned by Union Pacific.

The bridge has a history of structural issues. It was closed for repairs in 2025 after significant flaws were identified, briefly reopened in November 2025 with a 15-ton weight limit, and is now subject to this latest restriction.

Signed detour routes are in place, directing drivers to use Forest Street to Madison Street to Germania Street.

The city of Eau Claire is in discussions with Union Pacific regarding the possible transfer of bridge ownership to the city. This would allow the city to apply for state funding through the Wisconsin Department of Transportation’s local bridge improvement assistance program for eventual replacement of the bridge.
