Local small bridge weight posted after inspection
The Wisconsin Department of Transportation has launched a grant program to help local governments replace aging small bridges.
The Local Small Structures Improvement Program (LSSIP), established under the 2025-2027 biennial budget, provides $30 million in one-time funding to replace small structures, defined as crossings spanning more than 6 feet but 20 feet or less. These structures must have received a poor or severe condition rating from a certified bridge inspector during the statewide assessment.
This one-time reimbursement program provides up to 90% state funding for eligible projects, with local governments covering the remaining costs. It builds on an earlier investment from the 2023-25 budget, which provided $12.5 million to inventory and inspect local small structures across the state. That effort identified nearly 17,000 structures, of which more than 1,600 were rated in poor or severe condition. Many of these structures require urgent replacement to ensure safety, serviceability, and reliable access for residents, businesses, farmers, and visitors.
