De Pere South Bridge Connector Project Begins Construction

May 13, 2025

Work has begun on the South Bridge Connector project, a multi-phase effort to extend the transportation network between downtown De Pere and areas south of the Fox River.

Crews work on the South Bridge Connector Project.

The project broke ground this spring and includes building a new segment of connector roadway between Southbridge Road and Ashland Avenue/Gray Street, along with new bridge structures over Dutchman Creek and future trail connections.

Officials said the connector will offer an additional route for drivers and reduce congestion on existing streets. It is also expected to improve access to residential neighborhoods, commercial areas, and regional trails by completing a long-planned link in Brown County’s transportation system.

The design includes provisions for pedestrians and bicyclists, with separate paths and crossings integrated into the new corridor. Project leaders noted that these multimodal elements are key to meeting local mobility goals.

Officials have said construction is expected to continue through 2026, with phased openings for parts of the connector as segments are completed. At least one existing roadway will be closed temporarily for bridge and roadwork, and traffic will be detoured around active construction zones.

Municipal and county planners said that the project fills a longstanding gap in the area’s road system and positions De Pere for future growth by supporting safer and more efficient travel across the Fox River.
